About Type Your Way
A typing speed test that gives you a number and gets out of the way.
Why this exists
Most typing tests do one of three annoying things. They ask for an email before showing your score. They cap you at a few attempts a day and then offer a subscription. Or they bury the test itself under so much interface that you spend longer configuring it than typing.
Type Your Way is the version we wanted. Load the page, press a key, type for a minute, read your score. No account, no upgrade prompt, no daily limit. If you want to run it thirty times in a row to see whether your morning coffee is doing anything, nothing stops you.
How the scoring works
A word is five characters including the space. That is the standard convention, and it is the only way two people typing different sentences can compare results. Net WPM divides your correct characters by five and then by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM does the same with everything you typed, mistakes included.
We show both numbers on purpose. A single headline figure can hide a lot. If your raw score is well above your net score, you are fast but leaky, and the fix is usually to slow down by five percent rather than practise harder.
Consistency is the third number, and it is the one most sites skip. We sample your speed once a second and compare those samples against each other. A steady rhythm scores high. Bursts and stalls score low, which usually means specific letter combinations are costing you time you have not noticed.
What we deliberately left out
- Accounts. There is nothing to sign up for. Your history is kept in your browser's local storage, which means it survives a reload and disappears the moment you clear your browser data.
- Leaderboards. Public leaderboards on a client-side test are decorative. Anyone can fake a score by opening the console. We would rather show you an honest chart of your own progress.
- A server. Scoring happens on your device. Nothing you type is transmitted, which is both a privacy decision and the reason the test feels instant.
How it stays free
Advertising, and nothing else. There is no premium tier waiting behind a paywall and no plan to add one. Hosting a static site is cheap, ad revenue covers it, and that keeps the test open to everyone including people who would never pay for one. Details of what our advertising partners do are in the privacy policy.
Accuracy and honesty about limits
Browser timing is good but not laboratory grade. Your score will move a few WPM between runs on the same settings, and it will differ from another site's test because the word list and the scoring rules differ. Use it to track yourself over time, which is what it is good at. Do not treat a single run as a definitive measurement.
The certificate is generated locally from your result. It is not proctored and it is not verified against a database, and the terms page says so plainly. It is a tidy record of what you scored, not a qualification.
What is next
More word lists, including other languages. Per-key accuracy so you can see exactly which fingers are letting you down. Custom text, so you can practise on something you actually write. If there is something you want, the contact page works and we read everything that arrives.
